Filipino travellers residing in the Philippines can now apply for a Japanese tourist visa online following the expansion of Japan’s eVisa programme to include Philippine passport holders.
The Japanese government announced that, effective from 15 May, eligible Filipino tourists may apply through the JAPAN eVISA system, allowing them to obtain their entry permit online instead of submitting a traditional visa application through physical channels.
Under the new arrangement, applicants travelling on approved package tours organised by designated travel agencies can benefit from simplified requirements. Financial documents such as bank certificates, bank statements and Income Tax Returns (ITR) are no longer required when applying through this route.
However, the eVisa programme is limited to a specific category of travellers. Philippine passport holders residing in the Philippines are only eligible if they are participating in a packaged tour organised by a travel agency accredited by Japanese authorities. Independent travellers are still required to follow the standard visa application process through authorised visa centres.
Applicants are advised to ensure that all information provided in their online application is accurate and that all required documents are submitted. Incomplete or incorrect applications may result in delays or cancellations.
According to guidance issued by Japanese authorities, the embassy reserves the right to request a face-to-face interview if additional clarification is required during the application process.
The eVisa grants a single entry into Japan and allows a maximum stay of up to 15 days. It is available only to holders of ordinary passports travelling by air for tourism purposes.
Travellers visiting Japan for business, family visits, employment, study or other long-term purposes are not eligible for the eVisa programme. Those applicants must continue applying through the Japanese Embassy or Consulate and obtain a conventional visa sticker in their passport.
Japan to Increase Visa Fees From July
The introduction of the eVisa programme comes as Japan prepares to implement higher visa application fees for foreign visitors.
Japan’s government recently approved a fivefold increase in visa fees, marking the first revision in nearly 50 years. Beginning 1 July, the fee for a single-entry visa will increase from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen, while multiple-entry visas will rise from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen.
Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the adjustment was necessary due to rising operational costs and inflation. The ministry added that it does not anticipate a significant impact on inbound tourism demand.
Tourism Industry Sees Potential Benefit for Domestic Travel
Despite concerns that higher visa costs could affect travel budgets, some tourism stakeholders believe the increase may encourage more Filipinos to explore destinations closer to home.
Global Tourism Business Association president Michelle Taylan said travellers who have long planned to visit Japan are unlikely to be discouraged by the higher fees.
She added that the policy could also benefit the Philippine tourism sector.
The expansion of Japan’s eVisa programme is expected to streamline the application process for eligible Filipino tourists, while the upcoming fee increase may influence travel decisions in the months ahead.
